Communicating Through Soccer
Unfortunately, this past week, I was COVID positive for the second time this year. This meant I was repeating the same routine for a week: wake up late, drink tea, eat soup, take a nap, scroll through my phone, attempt to do homework, eat more soup, and go to bed. Sitting around at home all day meant I got to talk with my parents very frequently when they got home from work. People communicate with each other in different ways, in “Because My Father Always Said…” the son says, “Those were the kinds of conversations that Jimi Hendrix forced us to have,” (29). The way him and his father communicated was through music, but when I was sitting at home all day this past week, the way my dad and I communicated was through soccer.
Since kindergarten I grew up playing and watching soccer, similar to my dad who also played a lot of soccer when he was younger. So during this past week when I had COVID, my dad would come home from work and the first thing we would talk about is soccer. It could be related to Troy High soccer and how this week Athens is going to be our toughest game of the year. Or we could be talking about the latest Champions League and Premier League news. But then other days we would be talking about how embarrassing it is for the U.S. National Team to lose to Japan.
Ultimately, everyone has different ways they communicate with each other in a relationship, whether it is through something they have in common or something completely different from each other. Personally for me, I communicate with my dad through soccer while others could communicate through music, clothes, books, video games, etc.

Hey Kai, I liked how you decided to focus on the different methods of communication. I thought it was great that you were able to identify the method of communication used in the piece we read in class, and then relate back to a personal experience.
