What Makes Memorials Meaningful?

“The incorporation of memorials into the center of town life gives the dead their own place at that center,” (Booth). Many memorials are placed in the hearts of cities around hundreds of people, but what really intrigues people to stop and look at these memorials? Essentially, it’s the historical significance, location, and design of memorials that are compelling to people. One memorial that provides an example of all three of these aspects is the Memorial for famous boxer Joe Louis here in Detroit, Michigan.

Many people that have walked through Detroit may have seen a giant bronze fist and wondered what it was, well that would be the Joe Louis Memorial, built in 1986. This local memorial takes consideration of location, design, and historical significance, which makes it such an effective memorial. It is located in Hart Plaza, right next to the “Spirit of Detroit” as well as the Detroit River, and it is between the busy roads and sidewalks of Detroit. This central and busy location allows pedestrians and drivers to get a clear view of the sculpture. Additionally, its simple design of an arm and a fist strongly portrays the legacy of Joe Louis. The design shows his raw strength and power as a boxer, along with his perseverance to rise back up and get a victory for America after he lost his first fight to German boxer Max Schmeling in 1936. The Sculptor, Robert Graham, referred to it as a “battering ram” to symbolize he also fought against racism and Jim Crow Laws. Overall, the huge size of the memorial shows how big of an impact Joe Louis made for both the African-American community and the U.S. during early WWII tensions.

Next time you are walking in Detroit make sure to look out for this unique memorial, it shouldn’t be too hard to miss.

  1. Great post Kai. I think it's interesting how you boiled down the effectiveness of a memorial to three different things. Your provided example is especially relevant because it is probably one of the most recognizable memorials/statues in the area. However i do wonder how you would discern meaningfulness. You mentioned how "people stop and look", but when this memorial catches my eye, the historical significance doesn't play a part. I didn't know what it represented for a decent amount of time, and i think some people fall in the same boat. Interesting thing to think about.

  2. I like how you incorporated the reasons why memorials are so meaningful with an example of a important memorial nearby in Detroit. This was a great way to support you claim and was very engaging.
