Kai’s Kiosk: Out of Business

As the days become shorter, my kiosk of knowledge and self-expression finally comes to an end. It is a sad sight to see as I know many of my fellow peers enjoy reading this once in a lifetime blog. I know that one other blog in particular, aShish Kabob Express, greatly looks up to my wonderful blogs and finds my pieces of writing very inspiring. So whoever the author of that peculiar blog is, I hope that my wise words will stick with them. Anyway, here is my final blog of the year.

Art is such a complicated concept to write about because it is so diverse. It encompasses many different aspects of every day life. To me, art can be any object, experience, activity, or idea that is derived from your own personal creativity, emotions, and self-expression. Art can take many different types of forms. On the surface level, art can be paintings, sculptures, drawings, and architecture. But art can also be literature, music, films, photography, sports, and plays. Out of everything that can be considered art, music is one art form that has extreme significance to me. It’s a necessity in my everyday life. Music is best considered art when it evokes emotion, contains a greater meaning, and tells a story. Or simply if it is just nice to listen to. So here are three of my personal favorite songs that I consider to be perfect forms of art.

        1. Yes I’m Changing by Tame Impala: Yes I’m Changing, one of the most underrated songs found in the album Currents, is composed of drums, synths, guitars, and reverb that all lead to a greater message of the importance of moving forward in life. The combination of the lyrics and the instruments used in this song creates this overall feeling of content and acceptance. This song is such a good example of art because not only does it simply sound good, but it also conveys a more universal message. It communicates the importance of self-care by showing that you have to learn to focus on yourself rather than fixating on others. At the same time, it conveys the significance of moving forward in life by telling us that there are better things to come in the future. Yes I’m Changing has been on my rotation for a while, and listening to this song on repeat has taught me to appreciate the small things that I have in life that help me move past the more painful moments we experience, which is why this song is considered art to me.

        2. Come Back to Earth by Mac Miller: This song is a lesser-known piece by Mac Miller that I also consider a perfect form of art. For me, this is such a perfect song to listen to in the morning. It’s so smooth and calming. I feel like it helps relieve all the stress and tension built up inside of me. It’s such a simple sounding song but what makes it a great piece of art is that it also contains a greater message that I strongly agree with. Come Back to Earth focuses on finding peace of mind, moving on from the past, and staying composed and grounded to earth.  It also draws attention to the struggles of depression, anxiety, and overthinking. Ultimately, what makes this song a perfect example of art is that it focuses on a central message, which is overcoming mental challenges in order to find hope in the future.

    3. Sonder Son (Interlude) by Brent Faiyaz: I consider this interlude by Brent Faiyaz a perfect piece of art simply because of how pleasant and satisfying it is to listen to. The combination of Brent’s voice and the guitar riff playing in the beginning and in the background evoke a relaxing yet emotional feeling that ultimately make this song so nice to listen to. In contrast to the first two songs, I view Sonder Son (Interlude) as a perfect piece of art not because of some sort of deeper message, but simply because it is a song that is pleasing to your ears. This shows that short and simple songs, such as this one, can be perfect pieces of art just because of how good their rhythm and melody sound. It doesn’t have to be too deep. Music can be considered art solely based off of how good it sounds and how well it is composed.

To me, music is the specific form of art that I appreciate the most, and I believe that these three songs act as evidence as to why music is art. Music is a complex form of art containing elements such as rhythm, instruments, written lyrics, and singing that all work together in order to please the audience and evoke a specific feeling or emotion within the listeners. Music is distinctive. It is unique to the creativity and self-expression of the composer. Music acts a medium that conveys stories and experiences, universal messages, values, and emotions. The beauty of music is that it can be so simple but it can also contain many deeper layers or meanings. Essenitally, all of these intricate details that are important parts of music is the primary reason why music is a staple to the concept of art.
